Study of Weight of Excursionism, Visitors, Regulated and Non-Regulated Accommodation, Second Residence in Euskadi

Client: Basquetour – Basque Tourism Agency

Country and date of execution: Spain, July 2016 – May 2017

Category: Measurement

Description of the project

The principal objective of this project is to dimension the relative weight that six municipalities in the Basque Country and specifically 30 POIs (Points of Interest) receive, distinguishing between exursionists, tourists, holidaymakers and residents.

What is more, this study identifies the demand, studies the type of accommodation it uses, and examines in greater depth the use of housing for tourism and the way in which it is contracted, as well as factors of social irritation.

This study is in line with the principles required by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council in its Sustainable Destination Biosphere certification, which requires the study of the carrying capacity and distribution of tourism activity in the territory.

Most of the data that is frequently handled reflects tourists in regulated accommodation but tourists staying with family or friends and hikers and holidaymakers are beyond the reach of numerous studies, hence this very specific approach.

Nagore Espinosa Uresandi and the Department of Tourism of the University of Deusto developed this project.
